Schiff w/ Grabarskyy: Consumer Confidence is Cratering

In a recent interview on the Wealth Building Blueprint channel, Peter joined Vladyslav Grabarskyy to discuss several warning signs flashing across the economy, from record-low consumer sentiment to a stock market propped up almost entirely by a handful of AI darlings. The duo connects unsustainable government debt, rising interest rates, and the growing case for gold, while also noting the political fragility underpinning Bitcoin’s recent rally.

Peter starts by pushing back on the popular narrative that the economy is doing just fine. He points to a startling data point from the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment survey:

First of all, I don’t think the economy is great. In fact, we just got the Michigan University of Michigan consumer sentiment numbers. And their Current Condition Index sank to the lowest on record. And so that dates back to 1951. Now, we’ve had a lot of recessions. We’ve had a lot of wars. We’ve had a pandemic. We’d have a financial crisis. We’ve had a lot of problems over the course of those 70 years, yet never during any of those bad times were consumers as worried about their finances as they are right now.

From there, Peter explains why this moment is uniquely dangerous. Unlike past cycles where falling rates provided relief for a growing debt pile, he argues we’re now stuck with both high debt and high rates at the same time:

Then when the debt exploded after COVID, interest rates actually went way down. So then we got really low interest rates that made it possible to deal with really high debt. But what we’re going to have now is even more debt and we’re going to high interest rates. That’s an impossible combination. And it’s going to produce either massive defaults and bankruptcies on debt or runaway inflation.

Peter then turns to the stock market, arguing that the headline indexes are hiding a lot of pain underneath. He says most of the S&P 500 is already in rough shape, even if you wouldn’t know it from the index level:

But I think 60% of stocks in the S&P 500 are in bear markets. They’re down more than 20% from their highs. And a lot of other stocks are in corrections, down more than 10%. So you have the AI related stocks that are really just masking the problems for the overall market.

With bond yields climbing and confidence in government debt eroding, Peter makes the case that gold is still the ultimate refuge, even when conventional wisdom says otherwise. He flips the usual narrative about rising yields being bad for gold on its head:

Because right now, investors are looking at rising bond yields as a problem for gold, as a headwind. They’re actually a benefit like tailwind, because if there is a sovereign debt crisis, where do you go? Where do you hide from that? You go to gold. If you’re getting rid of US treasuries and you want an alternative safe haven, there’s nothing left.

Shifting to crypto, Peter warns that Bitcoin’s fortunes are far more tied to politics than its supporters like to admit. He sees a shift in Washington’s balance of power as a serious threat to the entire sector:

So I think there’s a lot of risk. And I think a big catalyst for the next sell-off in Bitcoin is the Democrats taking control of the House and potentially the Senate. Because I think if both houses go to the Democrats, that’s gonna create a very hostile environment for crypto in general, Bitcoin in particular. Yes, you’ll still have the president behind it and his cabinet, but Congress can still do a lot of damage.

Finally, Peter circles back to the housing and banking sector, predicting a repeat of past mistakes dressed up in new packaging. He dismisses talk of a Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac IPO as wishful thinking, forecasting the opposite outcome instead:

So you have the possibility of another mortgage crisis, another bankruptcy for Fannie and Freddie. Just earlier this year, they’re all talking about an IPO of Fannie and Freddie. Now I’m telling you, we’re gonna have a bailout of Fannie and Freddie. But yeah, and the banks, the banks are gonna be stuck with a lot of bad real estate debt. Plus they’re gonna have a lot of bad commercial real estate debt.
