Schiff w/ Diesen: Defaulting and Inflation are Our Only Options
In his latest interview with Glenn Diesen, Peter tackles the narrative that the US economy is thriving simply because President Trump insists it is. He walks through the deeper rot underneath the surface-level boasting, covering America’s addiction to debt, the unsustainable trade deficit, China’s retreat from US Treasuries, and the looming reality that the national debt can never be repaid in honest terms. They close with an analysis of Bitcoin’s shaky footing amid a broader market slump.
Peter opens by mocking the idea that economic strength can simply be declared into existence by the president:
So the economy is the hottest ever because Trump says it is. That’s it. I mean, that’s the only evidence. That’s the only proof. It’s whatever Trump says. So he says we have a booming economy. We have a booming economy, even if it’s a complete bust.
From there, Peter pushes back on the broader cultural assumption that debt is somehow a marker of prosperity. He argues that real wealth looks like the opposite of what Washington is selling:
I never bought into the idea that going into debt is a sign of strength or of wealth. When people are experiencing an increase in their worth and their income, they would pay down their debt. People aspire to be out of debt, to be debt free. That’s a sign of affluence, that you don’t have debt. But if you’re constantly going into debt and you owe more and more money, you’re going backwards. You’re not going forwards.
He connects this personal debt analogy to the country as a whole, explaining how decades of over-consumption have left America deeply indebted to the rest of the world:
Americans have been able to consume a far greater percentage of the world’s economic output than they really would otherwise be entitled to consume. And so too many goods have been headed towards America and too few goods have been consumed outside America. Foreigners have accumulated too much of our liabilities. So we owe the world a lot more than we could actually repay. And the world has misinvested a lot of that capital.
Naturally, this raises the question of why foreign nations, especially rivals like China, would keep feeding this dynamic by holding more US debt. Peter suggests they’re waking up to the geopolitical risk of holding US bonds:
I think they do, especially if they watch my podcast, they know it’s coming, but they could figure it out on their own. They don’t necessarily need me to shed light on something that is pretty well illuminated. So I think they understand that. But politically, they don’t want to be beholden. I mean, we’ve made it clear that China is our enemy. Well, why would they want to hold all these treasuries and hand us a weapon?
With foreign appetite for US debt fading, Peter lays out the grim fork in the road facing American policymakers. He’s blunt about the fact that there’s no version of this story where the debt actually gets paid back, since the alternative is simply dishonest default through inflation:
Those are the two ways. They can either be honest and default or they can create inflation and default dishonestly. But those are the only options. I mean, there’s no way we’re going to repay the debt. That’s not even a viable solution.
Before wrapping up, Peter takes a brief detour to comment on Bitcoin’s stubborn refusal to fall further despite rising interest rates in markets. He’s puzzled as to what’s propping it up:
I was just commenting about that myself a little earlier today on X, that I don’t know what’s holding Bitcoin up. I mean, it’s $81,800 in change, as we’re speaking. It should be a lot lower than that. I think given the fact that a lot of speculative assets other than AI related, and I don’t see any relation between Bitcoin and AI, but I would think that the rising interest rates and a bear market in 60% of the S&P 500, I think that would weigh on Bitcoin.
